The municipality will assist the Agricultural University in reviving the Botanical Garden.
This was announced today by Mayor Ivan Totev. Currently, the condition of the approximately 130-hectare site is deplorable. At the initiative of the mayor of the Trakia district, Kostadin Dimitrov, the municipal administration will meet with the rector of the Agricultural University, Prof. Dr. Kristina Yancheva. The meeting will discuss how the municipality can assist the university with the Botanical Garden.
This area is 100% state-owned and under the university’s management, but that doesn’t mean we can’t work to make it truly beautiful, Totev said.
The first step will be to install a fence around the entire property and secure it. The university has a conceptual project which includes clearing the overgrown vegetation, planting trees and warm-loving and exotic species, and constructing a presentation center. Once the fence is in place, we will be sure that no one can come with a cart and cut down and take away any trees that we have brought from Tanzania, for example. The mayor sarcastically referred to the frequent raids on the garden by Roma who supply themselves with firewood for the winter.
The mayor will propose that the Municipal Council vote on a specific amount for the restoration of the garden.
