On Earth Day, exactly 22 people gathered at the Botanical Garden of the Agricultural University of Plovdiv and cleaned part of its area. The “Think Green” initiative was carried out thanks to the I Love Plovdiv Association and PlovdivTown, in collaboration with volunteers who dedicate their personal time almost every Sunday to clean the green space near the Trakia neighborhood.
Over the past week, Plovdiv residents had the opportunity to vote for the location they wanted to be cleaned, choosing between the garden, the banks of the Maritsa River, Lauta Park, and the hills. The choice was eventually made clear, and today we found out why the Botanical Garden was selected.
The place truly needs help—whether voluntary or municipal, it doesn’t make a big difference, because otherwise, the beautiful forest is in poor condition, and the trash we unearthed from its soil was nothing short of shocking.
The Botanical Garden in Plovdiv has enormous potential. It could become a home to remarkable flora and fauna, a place for relaxation, and an outdoor learning center for the students of the Agricultural University. However, this will not happen until it is properly managed. Today, we managed to trim some trees, collect fallen branches, clear several areas, and mow the grass. But there is still much work to be done, and to accomplish it, we need to be united and more numerous.
Next weekend, we at PlovdivTown will once again support the initiative, but this time we won’t just be cleaning—we’ll also be having fun. After the clean-up, we will light up a barbecue and get to know better those who will work alongside us.
