An ornate fence with a total length of 1,350 meters will enclose the Botanical Garden, reported a Plovdiv24.bg journalist. The fence is planned for protection and safeguarding against vandalism, and 239,233 leva are needed for its construction. These funds have already been approved as a donation to the Agricultural University by the Plovdiv City Council during a session this week.
Currently, the Botanical Garden is not in its best condition, but the first steps towards its revival have started. The Trakia district administration has been actively involved in addressing the issue for years, and volunteers have cleaned the area multiple times. The Agricultural University has also expressed a desire to restore the garden as an attractive place for visits, walks, and relaxation, and has begun efforts to raise funds for its improvement and restoration.
The history of the Plovdiv Botanical Garden is long. It was added to the university’s assets in 1946 (as part of the then-Agricultural Faculty at the State University in Plovdiv). It is the third botanical garden in the country, established on 250 decares of land. Actual collection activities began in 1957 and were expanded in the following years. By 1990, it had established contacts with over 100 botanical gardens worldwide.
There have been several projects for its enhancement over the years, but they were not realized. Over time, its area has shrunk to 113.404 decares due to land being taken for the construction of buildings and the extension of Boulevard “Saint Petersburg,” which is intended to connect Hotel SPS with the Skobeleva Manka interchange (still unrealized).
